A Cord of Three Strands

Today, the perspective shifts a little bit.
Normally, when I sit down to type out these entries, my mind is processing the heavy, complex realities of cancer, faith, fear, and the unexpected lessons God is teaching me in the trenches of this diagnosis. But today, my heart is anchored in something purely beautiful.

Today, a dear friend is getting married.
As I picture him standing at the altar, adjusting his collar and waiting to step into this monumental new chapter, I can’t help but pause and reflect on the quiet, incredible miracle that marriage actually is.

Marriage is one of God’s most intentional creations. It’s the profound daily choice of two beautifully imperfect people deciding, morning after morning, to face the world as a front. It is gut-busting laughter and quiet, shared tears. It’s celebration and heartbreak, abundance and scarcity. It is the slow, sacred art of learning to become a “we” while still honoring the individual people God created us to be.

The world loves to paint marriage as the fairy-tale ending. Pop culture treats the wedding day like the grand finale—the moment the music swells, the credits roll, and everything magically falls into place. But anyone who has been in the thick of a marriage for any length of time knows the truth: the wedding isn’t the end of the story.

It is just the prologue.

The vows we speak on that day are easy to say when the room is full of flowers, excitement, and endless possibility. But the true, breathtaking beauty of a marriage isn’t born at the altar; it’s forged in the years that follow. It’s revealed in the painfully ordinary, unglamorous moments. The quiet mornings over coffee. The late-night conversations when you’re both exhausted. The invisible sacrifices nobody else will ever see, the forgiveness extended when it’s least deserved, and the stubborn decision to stay committed when the horizon gets dark.

My husband and I have been together for seventeen years now. Our story started long before we ever exchanged rings; in so many ways, we grew up together. We’ve celebrated major victories and walked through devastating disappointments. We’ve navigated the universal pressures of financial tightropes, career shifts, and family struggles. And more recently, we’ve stared down a primary myelofibrosis diagnosis that neither of us ever saw coming.

If these seventeen years have taught me anything at all, it is this: a resilient marriage is never built on two strong people. It is built on two fragile people who know how to continually lean on a strong God.

There have been plenty of moments during this cancer journey where I have felt entirely consumed by fear, exhaustion, and frustration. There are days when I simply don’t have much strength left to offer anyone, let alone a partner. Yet, through every clinical appointment, every agonizing test result, and every heavy conversation at our kitchen table, my husband has just… stayed. He continues to walk right beside me.

Not because marriage is always effortless, but because love is a choice. It’s a covenant, a quiet vow kept in the dark, and a profound realization that God is walking right alongside both of us.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 tells us, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

I have always held that verse close because it serves as a constant reminder that marriage was never meant to be sustained by sheer human willpower or emotional stamina. God is that vital third strand. He is the reservoir of grace when our patience runs thin. He is the anchor of peace when our circumstances feel completely overwhelming, and He is the source of deep healing when wounds need to be mended.

The strongest marriages aren’t the ones that bypass suffering; they are the ones that continually return to the feet of Jesus.

  • When life is vibrant and good, they thank Him together.
  • When life is terrifying and difficult, they seek Him together.
  • When they disagree, they ask Him for a shared wisdom.
  • When they can’t see the next step on the path, they trust Him together.

To my friend, as you step into this beautiful, lifelong covenant today, my prayer for you isn’t that your marriage will be entirely free from trials. Every marriage will eventually face a storm. My prayer is that when those winds do blow, you will look across at each other and discover together that God is fiercely faithful in every single season.

May your home be loud with laughter. May your love grow deeper and more resilient with each passing year. May you extend grace freely, receive it generously, and never stop choosing one another. And most importantly, may you always keep Christ as the unbreakable center of your cord, allowing Him to steady your steps and protect your bond.

The wedding day will fade into a cherished, beautiful memory, but the marriage that follows is where the true blessing lives.

Today, I am celebrating my friend and the incredible future waiting for him. And as I reflect on seventeen years with the man who still firmly holds my hand through every single storm we encounter, I am reminded all over again that God’s greatest gifts are rarely found in a single, fleeting moment—they are found in the lifelong journey of walking each other home.

Congratulations, my friend. I am praying for a lifetime overflowing with faith, joy, and a love that mirrors the very heart of God.
