This morning, I find myself thinking about how often we seek God’s hand while completely overlooking His heart.

When life gets hard, we pray for healing. When money is tight, we pray for provision. When relationships are strained, we pray for restoration, and when the future feels blurry, we beg for answers.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these prayers. Scripture explicitly tells us to bring our requests before God because He cares deeply about our needs, our fears, and our pain. But it makes me wonder: What if the greatest gift God wants to give us isn’t actually the miracle we’re asking for? What if the greater gift is simply Himself?

Finding God in the Fade

I’ve spent a lot of time lately living in the in-between. Waiting for test results. Waiting for answers. Trying to understand things that honestly make no sense from where I stand. And while I would love nothing more than a dose of certainty, I am learning something completely unexpected: God often reveals Himself most clearly in the places where we have the fewest answers.

Anyone can trust God when the road ahead is perfectly paved and visible. Faith only actually begins when the road disappears.

The Bible is packed with people who discovered this exact truth:

 Moses met God in a barren wilderness.

 David learned to trust God while literally running for his life.

 Joseph encountered God’s faithfulness in the confines of a prison.

 The disciples saw Jesus most clearly in the middle of a terrifying storm.

The pattern repeats all through Scripture. God doesn’t wait until the struggle is over to show up; He reveals Himself right in the thick of it. Maybe that’s why some of our deepest encounters with Him happen in seasons we never would have chosen for ourselves.

Shift the Question

The world often asks, “What can God do for me?” But maybe the better question for us to ask is, “Who is God revealing Himself to be in this season?”

Is He showing you that He is faithful? Is He proving that He is patient? Is He reminding you that He is near to the brokenhearted, or that His strength is perfectly sufficient when yours is completely spent? Sometimes we become so laser-focused on reaching the destination that we completely miss the Companion walking right beside us.

A Gentle Reminder: Circumstances change. Health fluctuates. Jobs come and go. Finances dip, and relationships shift. But God’s character never changes.

He is still good when life is difficult. He is still sovereign when life feels chaotic. He is still present when prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and He is still entirely worthy when we don’t understand what on earth He is doing.

The Work Beneath the Surface

One of the hardest lessons to learn is that God is still working even when we cannot see a single shred of evidence. We live in a world obsessed with immediate results. We want the breakthrough now, and we want the mountain moved yesterday.

Yet, so much of God’s prettiest work happens beneath the surface. A seed spends weeks hidden in the dark soil before anyone sees a sprout. Roots have to grow deep long before branches can reach toward the sky. A masterpiece takes shape one tiny, quiet brushstroke at a time.

God works in our lives the exact same way:

 While we are looking for dramatic, flashing signs, He is quietly strengthening our faith.

 While we are begging Him to change our circumstances, He is busy changing our hearts.

 While we are staring at a closed door, He is already preparing a better path ahead.

How many times have you looked back on a brutal season and suddenly realized God was carrying you the entire time? How many prayers seemed “unanswered,” only for you to discover later that He was actually protecting you, preparing you, or leading you somewhere far better?

Trusting the Unwritten Chapters

The truth is, God is active in every single season. He is working in the waiting, the silence, the setbacks, and the victories. He is working in ways we can see, and in countless ways we can’t.

That doesn’t mean every day is going to feel hopeful. Some days the storm clouds are just too dark, and our feelings are a lousy measure of God’s presence. Look at the cross—it reminds us that God accomplishes His greatest work in moments that appear completely hopeless. When Jesus was crucified, the world believed the story was over. Yet, God was busy accomplishing salvation for mankind. What looked like a final defeat was actually the ultimate victory. Because of that truth, we can trust that God is still writing chapters we cannot yet read.

A Challenge for Today

Today, I want to encourage you to take a breath, pause, and simply ask God to show you more of who He is. Not just what He can provide, fix, or remove—but just Him.

Open His Word. Sit quietly. Pray honestly. Ask your hard questions. The promise of Scripture isn’t that we will always understand the blueprint; it’s that those who seek Him will find Him. And when you discover who He truly is, something remarkable happens: peace replaces fear, hope replaces despair, and trust replaces anxiety. Not because your problems suddenly vanished, but because you’ve come to know the One who holds them all.

If you’re weary, keep drawing near. The God who created the stars knows your name, sees your struggle, and has not forgotten you. The greatest miracle might not be the answer you’re waiting for—it might just be discovering that He’s been walking beside you all along.
