If you’ve been following along here, you know that life on a rural property means you’re constantly balancing the beauty of farm life with the unpredictable realities of nature. But every now and then, a story comes along that completely redefines what resilience means and reminds us of the quiet, steady ways grace works in our lives.
Meet Teensy.
Back on April 15th, our flock faced a devastating predator attack. We lost birds we loved deeply, and Teensy was left severely injured, suffering from a traumatic neurological injury that completely paralyzed her right side. In the world of poultry, the prognosis for a chicken who can’t stand or walk is usually grim.
When you are staring at that kind of brokenness, it is easy to feel defeated. But we felt a deep calling not to give up on her, to have faith that life could find a way even when the odds were stacked entirely against us.
And Teensy clearly didn’t get the memo that she wasn’t supposed to make it.
The Long Road of “Chicken PT”
Rehabilitating a bird with nerve damage is a massive lesson in patience and trust. It doesn’t follow a straight line. For the last half of April and into early May, it was all about daily, intensive physical therapy sessions out on the porch. We watched her go from completely dangling her leg, to explosive kicks as her brain tried to rewrite its internal wiring, to finally grasping at her left leg with her right foot just to find her balance.
By mid-May, she moved into the “butt lift” phase—using her legs like tiny hydraulic jacks to test her vertical lift while keeping her chest safely on the ground.
Every single day for over a month, she fought for an inch of progress. It was a daily exercise in keeping the faith, celebrating the tiny victories, and trusting the healing process even when change seemed invisible. Soon, she was using me as human training wheels, standing tall only if she could lean her weight against my leg. And while she was standing there, testing her newly firing nerves, she would look up and gently preen my clothes. It wasn’t just physical recovery; it was a beautiful testament to the power of a safe, loving environment. She stopped worrying about survival and started focusing on her human flock.
Conquering the Six Steps
Because of her altered mobility, she now lives a luxurious life in a custom backyard bubble away from the drama of the main flock’s pecking order. She spends her days grazing, eating, and doing low-impact cardio in a secure outdoor setup.
But recently—nearly six weeks after the initial attack—she took her rehabilitation into her own hands and showed us just how powerful persistence can be.
I looked out on the back porch and found her standing there, bright-eyed and alert. To get there, she had to navigate from the grass, calculate her balance, and conquer six full porch steps entirely on her own. She rested between each one, pacing herself like a seasoned athlete, and made it to the top. She has a permanent “new normal” tilt and a bit of a limp, but she has officially recaptured her autonomy.
Watching her stand on that porch was a profound reminder that healing doesn’t have to look textbook perfect to be a complete miracle. Sometimes, we are left with a few scars and a bit of a limp, but we are still standing.
The Ultimate Evening Routine: Couch, Crate, and Grimm
While Teensy is a rugged outdoor explorer by day, her evening routine is where she truly shines, and where our hearts are most full of gratitude.
Every night, Teensy comes inside the house to sleep safely in her dedicated dog crate. But before lights out, she insists on being part of family time. As my husband and I unwind on the couch, Teensy settles in, lets out a series of soft, rhythmic, contented songs to let us know she’s happy, and turns her attention to the television.
Her favorite show? Grimm.
I’m convinced she’s a genuine fan. Whether it’s the high-contrast lighting, the dramatic shifts in music, or the fact that she’s a supernatural attack survivor who appreciates a good monster-hunting storyline, she is utterly captivated by the screen. She sits up, tracks the movement, and watches right along with us.
A Message of Encouragement
In a span of just six weeks, Teensy went from a casualty of a terrible tragedy to a beloved, television-loving member of the family who sings herself to sleep.
If you are currently walking through a season of hardship, dealing with a setback, or waiting on a breakthrough that feels impossibly far away, let Teensy’s story be a little beacon of encouragement for you today. Do not despise the small, slow steps. Lean on those who love you when you can’t carry your own weight. Rest when you need to, but keep pressing forward.
With a little accommodation, a mountain of patience, a lot of faith, and maybe the right evening watchlist, miracles can happen right in your own backyard.
